Regenerating the Valley Brook River in Crewe

Bentley Environmental Foundation (Bentley Motors)

Client: The Rivers Trust

Healthy rivers are a powerful ally in mitigating the effects of climate change; they can protect communities from flood and drought events, and they bolster ecosystem and biodiversity resilience. However, as evidenced in the Rivers Trust’s ‘State of Our Rivers 2024 Report’, no single stretch of river in England or Northern Ireland is in good overall health. To tackle this shocking statistic, the Bentley Environmental Foundation partnered with the Rivers Trust to restore the Valley Brook, a small urban river near Bentley Motors' headquarters in Crewe, which is facing water quality and flooding challenges due to agricultural and sewage pollution. There’s also significant local issues around flooding, access to green space and air quality. Through nature-based solutions, including wetland creation and habitat restoration, this project enhances blue-green spaces, strengthens biodiversity, and provides essential ecosystem services. By engaging Bentley employees and community members in volunteering and citizen science, this partnership sets a sustainable model for corporate involvement in environmental stewardship. Together, we aim to create a lasting environmental, social, and economic impact that supports a resilient future for Crewe and offers a replicable model for water stewardship across the UK.
