Nationwide’s Social Investment team is more than a group of dedicated colleagues, they’re custodians of the 1% of pre-tax profits that go to good causes annually, delivering a huge CSR strategy including a Community Grants programme, a strategic partnership with Shelter, colleague engagement and blueprint projects. The numbers speak for themselves; over the last six years, £8.7 million has been fundraised by colleagues and customers, over 188,000 hours have been volunteered, over 77,000 calls have been answered on the Shelter Helpline, £27 million in grants made to 645 projects, supporting an estimated 149,000 people, with over 1,000 colleagues and customers engaged in making local funding decisions. But it’s what lies behind the numbers that makes the real difference. The individual stories of people who were helped into a home, prevented from losing their home or supported to thrive at home are what drove the team to keep improving the programmes every year. This, combined with genuine respect, care and consciousness of the power imbalance that can exist between funders and charities, created a team which has developed a reputation across the sector as being proactive, approachable, collaborative and above all, human in its approach to delivering positive social impact.
